The article deals with the reconstruction of the laws that generate different accent types of derived nouns in Balto-Slavic and with the Balto-Slavic metatony as one of the most important constructive elements of this system. The author shows that metatony is only a side effect of the “secondary dominance” of the morpheme, and that the conditions of metatony generally coincide with conditions for secondary dominance. In the light of this, the author presents an analysis of these conditions and offers to interpret secondary dominance as a morphophonological result of tonal assimilation.
